More askvig History

A distant relative of the Askvig family, Barry Tungland, has put together a nice website about the Tungland Family in Norway. The website is: http://pages.prodigy.net/norsemen/index.htm

The following narrative is from Barry's website. It tells the story of Jonas Askvig's oldest daughter, Anne (or Anna?). This picture is of the Bokn family in the early 1900s in North Dakota.

Johan, my Great Grandfather, married a young lady, Anna Cecelie Jonasdatter Askvig, on November 10, 1897 in Hjelmeland parish where she was born and raised. As his father was not yet ready to pass the farm on to him, Johan elected to move off the farm to Stavanger, and became a butcher. There he and his wife began their own family with Karen Laurentse (Carrie) being born January 5, 1898; Georg born on September 20, 1899; and my Grandfather, Jonas, born on April 25, 1902. This small family experienced a major tragedy on November 24, 1903, when Johan suddenly died. Anna struggled on for a time but then her son, Georg, became ill and died May 4, 1904. She was likely desperate at this point and took the option to leave for America where her father and brother had already gone. Twenty-two days after Georg died, she arrived in New York on the SS Oceanic with her two other young children, Carrie and Jonas, and $29.00 in her pocket. She was traveling with her mother and sisters. From there the family went on to North Dakota to rejoin the men. In just over a year she met and married John Bokn and started life over in Benson county. They added four children of their own, Louis, Clara, Joseph, and Elmer, to the family. Anna died February 14, 1953 just before my own birth.

Here is a photo of Anne Askvig, grandpa Ole's oldest sister. This was taken at the same time as the front page picture. Anne's husband and one child died before she came to ND in 1904 with her mother and sisters. Anne then married a Bokn and settled in Knox ND.
